• What got you into making lathe-cut records?

I've been DJing for close to two decades now and i've always played records. the way of the music to play out these days however has taken a drastic turn for the worst changing to digital - so CDs, MP3s, etc. i tried that route but after playing a club for 4 hours my hearing would suffer due to the overcompression and plain loudness and lack of warmth from the digital music so i sold my CDJs and bought a lathe so i could cut my own tunes to play. that turned into a friend of mine wanting a record cut for his band, then that turned into a local artist wanting 30 records made and they turned out so good i put a sample up on soundcloud of it and the rest is history - i started getting approached from people in the UK, Germany, Greece, Ireland, France as well as over here in the states and Canada. it got to the point where i started getting so backed up i went out and got a second machine! :)

• Describe the process you go through to cut a record.

It was like second nature to me really. i studied about it and asked a few questions here and there from some people i know who cut masters for vinyl and i just kinda got it. i pretty much get the master from the artist, order the blanks from my supplier, do a test cut flat the way they send it then EQ it a bit to make it sound a little better for the record transfer and just go from there.

• Cassette tapes and vinyl records have gotten increased attention recently. Have you seen the same with lathe cut records?

let's put it this way, i'm so backed up with jobs right now it's a good two to three months before i can start any new projects and people are STILL signing up to get their stuff done. i've never been a huge tape person but one of the guys i cut for here in Omaha runs a tape label as does another person i cut for in Maine. it's again, a personal thing - no one is really making tapes anymore so you know the person making them put a great deal of time into them - same with lathe cuts, not a lot of bands can afford to do a record because of the pressing charges and the amount of records they'd need to press. with lathes, its easier because a band can make 25 7"s for a show or their webpage and sell all of them and not break their pocketbooks. that to me is important, which is also why my prices are so low - i know how it feels to want to put out a record and spending tons of cash to do it only to have a bunch left over. i did that with my drum n bass labels in the beginning until i got picked up for a pressing and distribution deal over in the UK. now i'm helping bands get something real out instead of a digital file or a burned CDR. having a "record" made makes a big difference it seems these days because it shows the artist is serious and not just someone with a macbook to record their tunes and a spool of CDRs to burn them off with.

• What advice could you give to someone wanting to get into making their own lathe-cut records?

take your time, research thoroughly and don't give up. it takes a LOT of money to get it going. if you buy a cheap machine for $100 don't plan on getting anything cut from it that sounds good. i've already invested probably $8,000 into my set up and i'm still not done. it's not like burning a CD so if you think you can just jump in head first, you'll be seriously surprised.
